Due to the increasing development of technology and media, this demand will certainly perpetuate for a long time. Our goal is to graduate communications designers who are thinkers who can design, who can creatively solve problems, and who have the aesthetic sense to visualize their ideas and the technical skill to execute them. In our program, we understand design as the myriad ways we create meaningful communications making complex information accessible, producing compelling experiences, and enacting social change.

An MFA in Communications Design is transformative

Use design principles such as contrast, hierarchy, and emphasis to guide the viewer’s attention. Establish a visual hierarchy that prioritizes key information, making it easier for the audience to understand and navigate the content. One of the best things about graphic design is that it never stands still for a moment. CISA has also worked to drive adoption of Secure by Design software through federal procurement.

Taken every semester, Graduate Projects allow students to focus on their work in one-on-one meetings with a faculty member. In addition to meeting biweekly with a Visual Communication Design graduate faculty member, students may sign up for Graduate Projects with writers, artists, and academics from other departments at SAIC. Ultimately, it is the student’s work that drives the choice of advisor, and both disciplinary and interdisciplinary work is supported and advanced. Students are either admitted into the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program, a two-year, 60-credit program, or the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio, a one-year, 30-credit program that can serve as a track into the MFA program. This path creates a three-year experience for students who often have little design experience and will benefit from additional education in preparation for continuation into the MFA program.

Furthermore, a communication designer focuses on aligning those elements with the overall strategy for the campaign and brand. Design communication is integral across various mediums, including print materials, digital platforms, branding, advertising, and more. It plays a vital role in shaping how individuals interpret and interact with visual content, making it a fundamental aspect of effective graphic design and visual communication.

If you’ve decided to pursue one of these careers, your next step after high school is to earn a graphic design or communications degree. Because the field of communication design combines both of these subfields, it’s a good idea to consider declaring a minor in whichever discipline you do not major in. For instance, you could major in communications and minor in graphic design, or vice versa.

The five-term, studio-based program encourages a unique and relevant contemporary design practice for a rapidly changing world. The third graduate degree offered at USC Roski is the MA in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere, a platform for scholarship in contemporary art. With a faculty of international distinction, the USC Gayle Garner Roski School of Art and Design offers emerging artists, designers, curators and critics a creative and intellectual atmosphere in which to study. Located at one of the world’s leading research institutions, Roski encourages interdisciplinary exploration throughout USC’s 18 professional schools — including six devoted to the arts.

Communication designers are creative, imaginative and artistic, and possess good hand-motor skills. They are methodical and process-oriented in approaching their work, exercising good time- and project-management skills. Communication designers have an enormous curiosity about learning different things. They must possess strong communication skills, and they need to know how to create informative and persuasive proposals while maintaining good client relationships. Students who include Architecture, Communication Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Industrial Design, or Interior Design among their program options on their admission application will be invited to submit a portfolio for admission consideration.

Our course curriculum is developed in cooperation with UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts (DMA). A video for Susan Kare, who designed interface elements and typefaces for the first Apple Macintosh personal computer. We are hands-on and immersive; any student of design can discover, iterate and refine their investigations through our many labs.

Additionally, students are encouraged to take advantage of an internship course for the experience in the summer between their junior and senior years. The B.F.A. in Communication Design develops designers who are conceptual thinkers, creative problem solvers and socially responsible citizens. Our graduates are regularly recognized in national and international design competitions and have a high placement rate at top design, interactive and advertising firms nationwide.

Due to the investments in digital innovation, the US is the country that offers the widest range of possibilities. The most promising of them are multimedia art and animation, and website design and development. Using the blank House of Cards templates, students are asked to weave a compelling visual narrative. The subject matter can range from the future of design to the dynamic landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and explore its evolving role in arts, culture, and daily existence. House of Cards is akin to a book with front and back covers, serves as a vessel for advocating, substantiating, and challenging the implications of our visual world. Pratt’s distinguished alumni are leading diverse and thriving careers, addressing critical challenges and creating innovative work that reimagines our world.

This interdisciplinary approach allows you to explore connections between Design and other fields, such as human-computer interaction, psychology, business, and the arts—encouraging you to think beyond traditional design boundaries. You are encouraged to explore these interconnections, developing a comprehensive understanding of how your ideas can both influence and be influenced by these larger contexts. Before starting any design project, have a thorough understanding of the message or information you need to convey.

You could be hired to work as the designer for one company, be part of a design agency, or work independently and take on clients as a freelancer. Communication designers who understand the nuances of successfully branding a business are in high demand. Every company wants to establish a unique identity in their respective field and stand out from their competitors in order to develop strong relationships with their audience base.

Roski’s BA program is a liberal arts degree, ideal for students who want to combine art with a study in a related field — or a completely different one. Though the emphasis remains on a studio practice, the flexibility of the BA allows students to pursue electives, a minor or a second major to develop a diverse academic career. For a more intensive undergraduate arts degree, the BFA in Fine Arts program allows students to immerse themselves fully in the creative process, spending the vast majority of their class time in studio courses developing high levels of proficiency. A distinguished and dedicated faculty mentors art students in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital media and critical studies. And the BFA in Design is a four-year, pre-professional degree leading to a variety of careers in advertising, publication, fashion, sports, entertainment and film design, among others. Professional communication designers build careers wherever communication is important.

In this context, graphic design only means the practice of creating visuals, as opposed to being a general term to cover all areas for modern designers. Our multifaceted and interdisciplinary Communications Design courses happen within a studio culture that invites exchange of individual perspectives, critique, visual literacy, media fluency, experiential learning, and innovative formal outcomes. You’ll explore meaningful visual forms through research, historical and contemporary contexts, experimentation, audience, technology, and play. The Illustration emphasis includes studio courses in advanced storytelling, socio-political commentary, and authorship. Electives include graphic novels, animation and 3D modeling, independent publishing, production design and character design.
